Bullying has become a very
serious problem all over the world, including in Indonesia. Bullying is an
aggressive act of abuse of power or coercion that is carried out repeatedly by
one individual or group against someone who is considered physically,
emotionally, or mentally weaker. This behavior can include repeated harassment,
violence, or mental assault on certain victims.
Bullying occurs because of an
imbalance of power between the perpetrator and the victim. Perpetrators tend to
feel more powerful and arbitrarily use their power to dominate, intimidate, or
belittle the victims. This can also be caused by physical differences, social
status, or even just differences of opinion between the perpetrator and the
victim. Factors such as emotional instability, lack of empathy for others, and
other behavioral problems can also predispose the bully to engage in bullying.
Bullying can occur in any
situation when humans interact with each other, whether it is in the family,
school, workplace, community, or the environment around us. This phenomenon is
more common among teenagers, especially in the school environment. This is
because adolescence is a complex period of development filled with physical and
emotional changes. At this time, individuals tend to be easily influenced by
surrounding influences, whether by individuals or groups. Adolescents are also
vulnerable to experiencing pressure and stress, whether in the academic,
social, or emotional fields, which may take it out on others through bullying.
There are several reasons why
bullying must to be immediately prevented and eliminated:
Causing Physical Health Damage
Bullying behavior can affect a
person's physical health. Bullies often use physical violence to harm and intimidate
their victims. Physical actions such as pushing, punching, kicking, or even
more serious physical attacks can cause injuries, bruises, or other types of
harm. Continuous bullying can also cause prolonged pressure and stress on the victims.
Stress can cause sleep disturbances, eating disorders, increased blood
pressure, a weakened immune system, and other health issues.
Affecting Psychological
Conditions
Besides having an impact on
physical health, bullying also affects the psychological condition of the
victims. Bullying victims often experience anxiety, depression, low
self-esteem, learning difficulties, fear of going to school, and some of them
even suicidal thoughts. Tragically, there are not even a few cases of suicide
that actually occur due to this bullying behavior.
Disrupting the Social
Development of the Victims
Acts of intimidation, violence,
or harassment inflicted by bullies can leave deep traumas to the victims. In
the long term, this can affect the social life of the victims. Bullying victims
tend to have low self-confidence, feelings of paranoia, and shame. They tend to
avoid other people because they are afraid that someone will do the same thing
to the person who bullied them. Therefore, bullying victims often struggle to
form and maintain social relationships with others.
Impairing Students' Academic
Abilities and Achievements
Bullying behavior can also
interfere with students' academic abilities. When someone is bullied, they
often have difficulty concentrating on studying and lack the motivation to
study because of the mental damage caused by the bullying behavior. Continuous
fear and stress can interfere with their focus and make it difficult for them
to study effectively, which can cause their academic abilities to decline.
Bringing Up Feelings of Hatred
and Revenge
Bullying can create strong
feelings of resentment from the victim against the bully. Bullying victims
often feel hurt, humiliated, and angry as a result of the treatment they
receive. These feelings can then trigger the urge to take revenge against the bullies.
It is not uncommon for many former bullying victims to take revenge by engaging
in bullying behaviors towards other people who are weaker, due to their
inability to fight back against the person who bullied them before. They may
feel that by bullying others, they can gain a sense of satisfaction and power
that was previously taken away by the abuser. However, a cycle of revenge like
this will only exacerbate and create a situation that will continue. This can
continue if the victim also does the same thing and it becomes a bad tradition
that we should get rid of.
Increasing Violence and Criminality
Bullying does not only have a
negative impact on the victims but also has a negative impact on perpetrators
and society. Bullying can be a trigger that can increase the rate of criminality
in society. If not handled properly, bullying can create a toxic environment
and produce individuals who tend to commit violence and criminal acts. If left
unchecked, bullies will continue their behavior in the long term, until it can
cause someone to commit even bigger crimes. This can result in higher crime
rates in a country.
Creating a Safe and Harmonious
Environment
By eliminating bullying, we can create a safe, harmonious, and friendly environment for all
individuals. Everyone has the right to feel safe, whether at school, at work, or
in the community. By fighting bullying, it's a sign that such behavior is
unacceptable and intolerable. This can increase a sense of brotherhood,
tolerance, and mutual respect between people.
In conclusion, bullying is a
serious problem that can affect the well-being and health of its victims, both
physically and mentally. This behavior involves repeated abuse of power and
coercion against someone who is considered weaker. Bullying has negative
impacts, such as causing physical and psychological health damage of its victims,
disrupting the social development and academic achievement of victims,
triggering feelings of hatred or revenge, and increasing violence and criminality
in society. Therefore, bullying needs to be prevented and eliminated to create
a safe and supportive environment. With the right steps, we will be able to
reduce bullying behavior and create a more positive environment for students
and the community.
